Did Herod Help Fund The Jesus Movement?
My good friend Josh Peters gave the sermon tonight at Crave, and he pointed a funny little instance in the Gospel of Luke that I somehow missed.
Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.
Not only is it interesting that Jesus was in part bank rolled by woman --- but not just any women --- the wife of King Herod’s ἐπιτρόπου “one to whom a charge is entrusted, a trustee, administrator.” Some translations render that “steward of Herod.”
How wonderful is that --- basically you’ve got Herod indirectly financing Jesus’ Ministry! Brillant.
