Of Virgins and Zygotes ...

In Matthews 1:20 an Angel comes to Joseph and tells him [1] not to divorce Mary (who has been found to be pregnant before their marriage), because:

In the Greek:

“... τὸ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῇ γεννηθὲν ἐκ πνεύματός ...”

Literally:

“... for that [which is] in she [is] born by [the] Sprit ...”

If we believe God was incarnated in Jesus, was it from the moment of conception that He became incarnate, or was there a certain point where this happened. Did God in fact reduce himself into an embryo? If there is another point at which human life “begins” when is that?

It would seem that if Jesus was formed into Mary at conception --- then the soul, life, etc begins at conception. Therefore, did He become incarnate at the point Jesus’ zygote was conceived?

How then, should this inform our morality on matters of destructive embryonic stem cell research, and abortion?

[1] But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. (ESV)

Interesting point. Where would we be now if Mary had chosen to abort the Son of God? If one believes that life begins with conception, it stands to reason that the taking away of that life at any point would be considered a murderous act. Remember in the Scott Peterson trial he was convicted of a double homicide...that of his wife, Lacey and his unborn child, Conner. Why don't most people see abortion as murder? It would've been perfectly acceptable if Lacey had aborted her child on her own...I just don't get it. Oh, we are sort of neighbors...I live in Escondido. My best friend lives in Trabuco Canyon. Nice reading your blog...feel free to visit mine.
